Galaxy S4 Zoom: The Phamera

Posted on Jun 18 2013 - 7:45pm by Ajay Bisht
Surely, Samsung’s goal of making “an industry leading smartphone with a high-end camera” in a single device has been achieved. With all the features of the Galaxy S4 and some of the capabilities of the Galaxy Camera combined, its versatility as a “phamera” is without question. It resembles a Galaxy S4 mini – just without the cool camera and the features that come with it. Innovation, versatility, convenience combined into a single gadget.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom sports a 960×540 pixel, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display covered by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass for protective purposes. Under the shell, it is run by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 1.5 GB of RAM with an internal 8GB memory (5GB usable), which is expandable up to 64GB thanks to a microSD slot. It is thicker than the Galaxy S4 (obviously) with 125.5×63.5×15.4 mm dimensions and is considerably thicker at 208grams (compared to Galaxy S4’s 130g).

Despite the bulk however, the combination’s key point is its camera, perfect for those who prefer a smartphone and a professional camera (or one that is capable of being one) in one. The camera has a powerful 16MP CMOS (yes, that’s 16 megapixels) sensor, a 10x zoom (even raised to this zoom level, manufacturers guarantee that it is of high quality compared to other cameras), 24mm lenses and an optical image stabilizer. It is capable of recording up to 1080p videos at 30 frames per second and has Geo-tagging, face and smile detectors, is able to take panoramic images and has a Xenon flash. Its frontal camera has a respectable 1.9MP, great for video calls.

The phone even has camera specific features like Smart Mode (taken from the Galaxy Camera) and Smart Suggest, which allows the phone to suggest the suitable settings which would make the image achieve maximum aesthetic quality. However, it’s best feature is probably the Zoom Ring, which enables you to automatically activate the camera, take a picture of whoever or whatever and send it to whoever you are talking or sending a message to. Photo Suggest is also present, it’s a feature that uses online photo libraries to suggest the best location and angle. The phone has all the nooks and crannies to completely control your images and video like aperture, exposure, white balance with a number of preset shooting modes.
The operating system running is of course, Android’s 4.2 Jelly Bean topped with Samsung TouchWiz. The phone has an accelerometer, a gyroscope, proximity sensor and a compass. The phone (or phamera) is powered by a Li-Ion 2330 mAh battery which would allow you to take hundreds of snapshots and hours of video for quite some time. It has an FM radio, utilizes HTML5 as its internet browser and supports Java. It also has Bluetooth, supports WAV and MP3 audio formats, 3.5mm audio jack (for earphones and speakers) and a loudspeaker. Like other Samsung phones, it has an S-Voice language commands and dictation feature, a TV jack, supports MP4, DivX, H.264/H.263 and WMV video formats, an image and video editor, a document viewer and Swype. It has Wi-Fi, USB ports (microUSB v2.0), and Dropbox. Lastly, it also utilizes Google Search, Maps, Gmail,YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom will be arriving in the US and United Kingdom markets in the third quarter of this year, although the company is yet to confirm the digits. This smart phone – camera combination is a must have for those looking for an easy and convenient way of forming memories and extending bridges.
